Airport in Aalborg lodges complaint against financial aid given to Aarhus Airport by the municipality
In recent news, there has been no concrete evidence found to support the existence of a funding dispute or competition issues between Aalborg and Aarhus airports, according to a search of available data up to August 2025.
The search results, however, did reveal some interesting findings. For instance, the acquisition of a Falcon 6X jet by Air Alsie, operating around Aalborg and Aarhus, was among the topics covered. Additionally, there were mentions of European aerodrome regulations, government tender information in Denmark, and unrelated business events and stock information. Regrettably, none of these mentioned any conflicts or funding disputes involving the airports.
Aalborg Airport's Director, Thomas Kastrup Larsen, has expressed concern about Aarhus Airport offering favourable conditions for airlines, which he believes has resulted in Aalborg missing out on certain routes. This concern has led Aalborg Airport to file a complaint with the EU Commission over funding received by Aarhus Airport from three local municipalities.
Aalborg and Billund airports, on the other hand, do not receive similar funding, leading to an unfair competitive advantage for Aarhus Airport. This issue was highlighted when budget airline Ryanair pulled all of its services from both Aalborg and Billund airports but continued to operate at Aarhus and Copenhagen. The reason for this decision was attributed to a recently-introduced government tax on passenger air travel.
The Mayor of Aarhus, Anders Winnerskjold, has stated that an "external legal consultation" has advised Aarhus Municipality that all rules relating to the airport's funding have been complied with. Winnerskjold also mentioned that they are still working on a solution for the airport's financial situation, which has been bolstered by municipal subsidies totalling over 600 million kroner from Aarhus, Norddjurs, and Syddjurs municipalities. These subsidies have helped prevent Aarhus Airport from going out of business despite low passenger numbers and low profitability.
Despite these revelations, no new information about the impact of the funding received by Aarhus Airport on Aalborg Airport's operations was provided. The cost of offering equivalent terms to airlines as those at Aarhus Airport is estimated to be an eight-figure number (in kroner) for Aalborg Airport, but no new information about this cost was provided in the search results.
In conclusion, while there is no evidence of a funding dispute between Aalborg and Aarhus airports, the competitive advantage enjoyed by Aarhus Airport due to its funding remains a concern for Aalborg Airport. The ongoing work to resolve Aarhus Airport's financial situation and the cost implications for Aalborg Airport will continue to be topics of interest.
