AMC (Appalachian Mountain Club) Launches Gravel Road Cycling Network with Debut of Gravel Expedition Handbook

Let's Cruise the Wild Gravel Roads of Maine

April 2024 marks a thrilling chapter for outdoor enthusiasts as the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) unveils 330 miles of gravel roads for mountain biking and bikepacking in the Maine Woods! To navigate these rugged landscapes and untouched wilderness, cyclists can rely on the Gravel Adventure Field Guide - a 68-page treasure trove packed with full-color maps, custom art, and intriguing tales.

Nicole Zussman, AMC's fearless leader, shares her excitement for this expansion, stating, "AMC connects people with nature while preserving our planet. These gravel routes offer an incredible experience for cyclists."

Formerly used as logging roads and access paths for sporting camps, the Maine Woods' gravel routes provides a leisurely yet scenic adventure for families and biking aficionados alike.

The Gravel Adventure Field Guide boasts illustrated maps of gravel cycling routes, QR codes linking to RideWithGPS offline routes, and all the essentials for accessing AMC's 114,000-acre Maine Woods property. Starting mid-April, grab your free copy at local bike shops, coffee houses, breweries, and outdoor retailers in Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. Check here for distribution locations.

Carolann Ouellette, Director of the Maine Office of Outdoor Recreation, acknowledges Maine's cycling potential, saying, "These gravel roads open new avenues for adventure in Maine."

The Gravel Adventure Field Guide team, Juan DelaRoca and Stephen Beneski, express their enthusiasm for the untamed beauty awaiting cyclists in the Maine Woods.

So, what's the AMC? Founded in 1876, it's the trailblazer of conservation and recreation, protecting and promoting the great outdoors across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.

For press inquiries, holler at Pamela Brown, AMC's Director of Communications.

While an official AMC Maine Woods Gravel Adventure Field Guide may not be available, you can join the annual Maine Gravel Cycling Weekend at Medawisla Lodge, featuring curated rides and workshops. Or visit the Mountain Brook Cabin for a lodging experience amidst nature. Offline ride route information is available for cyclists during the Maine Gravel Cycling Weekend, but not as a standalone field guide. For offline field guides in other regions, check out the Gravel Adventure Field Guide brand—just remember, this doesn't cover Maine at the moment.
