Asian Designers Mittai and Bungcaras Make Waves in Sustainable Fashion
Two designers from Asia, Damini Mittai and Jann Bungcaras, are making waves in the fashion industry with their unique approaches to sustainability and empowerment. Mittai, based in India and Toronto, uses her label Koaka Collective to empower marginalised women from the Global South. Meanwhile, Bungcaras, from the Philippines, draws attention to textile waste washing up on his country's shores, including items from luxury brands like Fashion Nova.
Mittai's Koaka Collective focuses on protecting women's rights to financial autonomy and making them active agents in the global sustainable movement. The collective aims to create a positive impact on the UN's sustainable development goals (SDGs).
In Hong Kong, an average of 402 tonnes of textile waste is sent to landfills daily, according to a report by Redress, a Hong Kong-based NGO. Redress is partnering with the UN's Fashion and Lifestyle Network to focus more on Asia in global events. Recently, Redress Design Award alumni designers, including Rajo Laurel from the Philippines, joined a panel to discuss their brands' impact on the SDGs. Laurel is known for speaking extensively about textile waste management in his country and the luxury brand items washed ashore.
Both Mittai and Laurel are using their platforms to highlight important issues in the fashion industry. Mittai's work empowers women while Laurel raises awareness about textile waste, particularly from luxury brands. Their efforts contribute to the UN's SDGs and demonstrate the power of fashion as a force for positive change.
