The United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has implemented a new facial biometric process at Denver International Airport (DEN), with the aim of enhancing security and efficiency during the boarding process for international departures. This innovative system, known as TSA PreCheck, has been installed at 14 departure gates and is being used across 13 airlines. The implementation of TSA PreCheck is part of CBP's congressionally mandated biometric entry-exit system. TSA PreCheck captures and transmits a traveler's image to CBP during the boarding process for identity verification. This process is designed to reduce boarding times and improve the efficiency of the airport's operations. CBP has taken significant steps to protect the privacy of all travelers during the facial biometric process. The amount of personally identifiable information used in the process is limited, and strong technical security safeguards have been employed to ensure the security of the data. Foreign nationals who are statutorily required to provide biometrics will have their photos stored in a secure Social Security Administration system. However, photos of U.S. citizens will be deleted within 12 hours as a privacy measure specific to U.S. citizens in the facial biometric process. The facial biometric process offered by TSA PreCheck is voluntary for U.S. citizens. Travelers who wish to opt out of the new biometric process may notify an airline official or a CBP officer as they approach the departure gate. Opting out requires travelers to present a valid travel document for inspection by the gate agent and be processed consistent with existing requirements for departure from the United States. Kevin McAleenan, the president of BigBear.ai, the company that developed TSA PreCheck, expressed his satisfaction with the early results from the implementation of TSA PreCheck at Denver International Airport. Since its inception in 2018, TSA PreCheck has processed over 28 million passengers. The biometric identification system TSA PreCheck used at Denver International Airport was developed by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA). This solution offers a secure and efficient means of properly identifying individuals traveling internationally in settings with required security protocols. CBP is committed to its privacy obligations during the implementation of the biometric entry-exit system. The agency has implemented safeguards to protect the privacy of all travelers during the facial biometric process. TSA PreCheck is impacting the boarding process for over 46,600 international departing passengers at DEN, making travel more secure and efficient for all involved.
