Blaze ravaging the renowned Cathedral of Córdoba
In an unexpected turn of events, a fire broke out at the Mezquita-Catedral in Cordoba, Spain, last evening. The historic monument, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has managed to avoid severe damage, thanks to a swift emergency response.
The fire originated from a short circuit in an electric floor sweeping machine stored in the Almánzor chapel, the eastern part of the mosque that houses many chapels from the 16th and 17th centuries. The flames spread, primarily affecting the roof of the chapel, causing it to collapse over approximately 25 to 60 square meters. Adjacent chapels suffered mainly from smoke and heat damage, affecting art pieces and structural elements like vaults and a column.
Despite the dramatic visuals of flames coming out of the roof, as captured in video footage, the fire was brought under control by the fire brigade after about one and a half hours. The police and the chapter of the cathedral also reported on the incident.
The extent of the damage is still under assessment, but it is clear that the monument has largely remained intact. The Mezquita-Catedral, renowned for its endless rows of red-and-white horseshoe arches, has managed to preserve its unique synthesis of Moorish and Christian architectural styles.
Following the incident, the cathedral was reopened to visitors, and restoration plans are already underway. With more than two million people visiting the cathedral last year, it is a testament to the resilience and importance of this architectural landmark that combines Islamic and Christian heritage.
