Celebration of Friendship Day 2025: An Unexpected Hike Becomes an Enduring Relationship

In the heart of Himachal Pradesh, four women embarked on a spontaneous trekking adventure to Kheerganga, a picturesque destination nestled amidst the Himalayas. The journey began in Chandigarh, with stops in Bhuntar, Kasol, and Barshaini before reaching the starting point of the trek.

Along the way, they encountered a group of boys from Bangalore who lent a helping hand when one of the women slipped near a waterfall. The trek, spanning 12 km and taking approximately 5-6 hours, was moderately challenging and offered breathtaking views of forests, waterfalls, and meadows.

The route to Kheerganga was well-marked and manageable for beginners, passing through scenic villages like Nakthan and Rudranag. The trek culminated at the summit, where the group was greeted by a vista of wildflowers, crisp mountain air, a small Shiva temple, and natural hot springs.

During their stay, the group experienced the local culture, sampling Himachali thalis, pancakes, momos, and bun chhole in Kasol. They also visited Manikaran, a revered site for both Sikhs and Hindus, on their return journey.

One memorable experience was staying at The Himachali Guide, a lively cafe-homestay above Barshaini. Another highlight was a night spent at a homestay run by a kind pahadi uncle in Tosh. The group also visited Kalga, a Himalayan fairytale with blue-green wooden homes, apple orchards, and children playing.

For solo travelers and first-timers planning the Kheerganga trek, here are some tips:

  • Timing: Visit during the best trekking seasons — March to June or September to October — to avoid extreme weather and slippery trails. Avoid the monsoon season due to heavy rains and slippery paths.
  • Preparation: Wear sturdy trekking shoes and carry essentials such as water, flashlight, warm clothes, and rain gear. The mobile network is weak beyond Barshaini, so plan accordingly.
  • Route and Duration: The trek starts from Barshaini and covers around 12 km, passing through scenic villages. The trail is well-marked and manageable for beginners and solo trekkers, usually completed in 2 days.
  • Safety and Navigation: Stick to well-marked paths and avoid trekking alone after dark. Consider starting early in the day to complete the trek comfortably. Alternate routes from nearby villages can offer quieter experiences but may be more challenging.
  • Accommodation and Facilities: Kheerganga is famous for its natural hot springs, providing a great way to relax after the hike. There are guesthouses and campsites for overnight stays. Booking in advance during peak seasons is recommended.
  • Physical Fitness: Though beginner-friendly, a moderate level of fitness helps, as the trek involves gradual ascents and trekking over varied terrain.
  • Local Etiquette and Environment: Respect local culture, keep the environment clean by not littering, and use eco-friendly products.

Budget guesthouses and homestays are available in Kalga, Barshaini, and Tosh. A 98-year-old woman served tea at a Himalayan tea stall during a trek to Kheerganga, adding an extra touch of magic to this unforgettable adventure.
