Challenging the Lone Conquest of Gillespie Pass | Lone Youthful Explorer
In a guest article on a popular outdoor website, Paul Bury shares his experiences of tramping the Gillespie Pass Circuit in Mt. Aspiring National Park. This 3-4 day, over fifty-kilometre long hike is known for its rugged terrain and stunning scenery.
On the second day of his tramp, Bury climbed over the 1600-metre Gillespie Pass, a challenging ascent that offered breathtaking views of beech forests, alpine rivers, and meadows. The pass itself was one of the most beautiful days Bury had ever had tramping.
To begin his journey, Bury opted to fly into the Siberia Valley, using Wilkin River Jets for the service. The Siberia Hut, a famous DOC hut that requires bookings in advance during the summer, was his starting point.
The Gillespie Pass Circuit is notorious for its river crossings that can flood quickly, having claimed several lives over the years. Bury made sure to fill up on water before attempting the traverse, as there is no water above the bush line.
The pass is a lot of root climbing, climbing over boulders, big steps up and down, and very long days. Bury struggled with heat sickness during the tramp, due to not eating enough and not hydrating properly. He should have budgeted in more time for each day, ensuring he ate plenty of food and snacked a lot more on the track.
Despite the challenges, Bury found the Gillespie Pass Circuit to be one of the best hikes he has ever done. Lake Crucible, a popular destination on the circuit, was a highlight, a 6-8 hour return trip from the hut.
The 20-kilometre long walk out of the valley is relatively easy, but still very long with many ups and downs over tree roots in the forest. The jetboat out of the valley to Makarora is affordable at only $25.
Bury carried an emergency bivvy and an extra mat for the solo tramp. He always registers his intent on the Plan My Walk app, with friends, and in this case, with transport.
The Gillespie Pass might be Bury's new greatest backcountry achievement. While it was a challenging hike, the stunning views, beautiful landscapes, and personal accomplishment make it a must-do for any serious trampers. Bury encourages others to take on this incredible adventure, but to do so prepared and with a healthy respect for the challenges it presents.
