Choirs associated with Hellgate perform a concert at Carnegie Hall

The Hellgate High School Varsity and Chamber Choirs recently embarked on an unforgettable journey to New York City, where they showcased their exceptional vocal talents at the prestigious Carnegie Hall.

This performance was a significant milestone for both ensembles, providing them with the opportunity to perform on one of the world's most renowned stages. During their stay, the choirs had the unique chance to collaborate with Broadway professionals, participating in workshops and masterclasses led by Broadway stars.

One such collaborator was Andre J Thomas, a composer and director for the Broadway musical "Wicked." The experience was a valuable learning opportunity for the students, enriching their performance skills and offering insights into the world of professional theater and music.

Lexi Johnson, a sophomore at Hellgate High School, attended the Broadway musical "Wicked" and found it to be a "super cool experience." Meanwhile, Amalie Nevarez, another sophomore who has been doing choir since middle school, described the New York City trip as a "big takeaway." Nevarez particularly enjoyed SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, a skyscraper with floor-to-ceiling mirrors taller than the Empire State Building.

The choirs prepared for their performance at Carnegie Hall by holding multiple rehearsals within the concert hall itself. When it came time to perform, Nevarez noted that there wasn't a lot of anxiety or nervousness among the group. Instead, they felt a sense of camaraderie and excitement.

In addition to their performance, the choir members had the opportunity to sightsee, learn from Broadway stars, and experience the cultural vibrancy of New York City. Nevarez even had an authentic New York City experience, almost getting spat on!

The trip was not only a celebration of the choir's musical abilities but also a testament to the school's excellent choir program. Two choirs from Hellgate High School, along with a choir from Big Sky, made the journey to New York City to perform at Carnegie Hall.

For Lexi Johnson, the trip was a chance to explore other parts of the world, as Montana is smaller compared to other places. Regardless of their reasons for attending, all students returned with a deeper appreciation for the performing arts and a sense of accomplishment from their remarkable performance at Carnegie Hall.
