Contemporary Debates in the Execution and Implementation of Skilled Medical Professionals
In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are stepping up to take on leadership roles. A recent webinar, part of HealthLeaders' The Winning Edge series, highlighted the significant contributions of APPs in various healthcare systems, including Dartmouth Health, OhioHealth, and Denver Health.
At Dartmouth Health, APPs demonstrate a keen aptitude for collaboration and curiosity. Their development as leaders is heavily influenced by mentorship, a crucial aspect of their growth. APPs at Dartmouth Health can serve in diverse leadership roles, such as care coordination and medical staff governance. Debra Fournier, DNP, APRN, the Chief Advanced Practice Provider Officer at Dartmouth Health, emphasised the importance of setting expectations, filling education gaps, and establishing mentorship relationships during the onboarding process.
Dartmouth Health also supports APPs who function as independent providers in primary care clinics. New APPs are paired with more experienced APPs or physicians, and any knowledge gaps are recognised and addressed. APPs at Dartmouth Health often serve in consulting roles and train clinicians at the health system's academic medical center.
OhioHealth, another leading healthcare provider, also values the role of APPs in leadership. APPs who serve in leadership roles at OhioHealth are consistent high performers, demonstrate versatility, and have a desire to lead care teams. APPs at OhioHealth serve in leadership roles in care coordination, including nursing and pharmacy. OhioHealth provides a unified approach to onboarding for physicians and APPs in the first week of employment, focusing on the health system's values, mission, and team-based care training.
APPs at OhioHealth's primary care clinics are often leading efforts in care coordination and continuity of care, and have been involved in ambulatory quality care initiatives. Teresa Caulin-Glaser, the executive vice president and chief clinical officer at OhioHealth, was part of the panel of experts at the webinar.
Denver Health, another healthcare system, also values the contributions of APPs. APPs at Denver Health provide behavioural health services in primary care clinics. Onboarding for APPs at Denver Health includes establishing specific milestones for APPs in the onboarding process, as stated by Read Pierce, MD, the CMO at Denver Health. Orientation is also provided for APPs who move laterally between specialties, ensuring they have foundational and core knowledge in their new specialty.
APPs at Denver Health are active in clinical staff governance, such as serving as members of the medical executive committee and APP Council. Pierce also highlighted the importance of APPs in primary care practices, including their role in managing their own patient panels.
Robust onboarding programs are essential to position APPs for success. APPs who serve in leadership roles should have an excellent performance record, communicate well, and bring staff members together.
