Customs Raid Uncovers Illegal Employment in German Hospitality Industry
On September 19, 2025, the Main Customs Office Kiel conducted a nationwide focus inspection in the hospitality and hotel industry. The operation, involving various cities, aimed to ensure compliance with minimum wage and social security obligations, and to investigate illegal employment or improper receipt of social security benefits.
The inspections resulted in interviews with 27 employers and 151 employees. While the names of the companies suspected of illegal employment or unauthorized receipt of social security benefits remain confidential, the search confirmed the existence of such activities. The data collected will now be compared with company records, and further checks will be conducted.
Regular inspections in the hotel and catering industry are crucial due to its frequent irregularities. The fight against black work and illegal employment helps secure social security systems, state revenues, and fair working conditions. The customs office works closely with other authorities and pension insurance to achieve this.
The inspections found six cases of suspected illegal residence, with one also involving suspected document forgery. The names of the suspected companies and specific accusations remain unknown, as the Zollstelle Kiel has not released any publicly available details. The collected data will now be analysed to determine the next steps in the investigation.
