Czech Democracy Camp Unites Diverse Youth, Fostering Friendships and Skills
A recent camp in the Czech Republic, Demokratielerncamp, brought together young people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Despite initial differences, participants quickly formed friendships and learned valuable skills under the guidance of Lucie Römer.
The camp, involving Tomi from Kyrgyzstan and Ilyas among others, began with participants overcoming cultural barriers. Ilyas noted that these differences were enriching rather than divisive. Tomi, feeling at home, improved her German and discovered the importance of honest conversations in journalism.
Under Römer's tutelage, participants learned to create professional videos using simple means. A project in Schatzlar resulted in a mood-setting video capturing the camp's unique atmosphere. The camp's daily life served as a practical democracy lesson, with every voice counting in camp council meetings. Evening cultural exchanges included traditional dances, discussions about eating habits, and late-night music campfires.
The Demokratielerncamp in the Czech Republic concluded with a symbolic ceremony, marking the lasting connections made among the participants. Despite their diverse backgrounds, the young people learned from each other, formed friendships, and developed new skills, proving that cultural differences can be enriching rather than barriers.
