Our Journey Commences

Today, we delve into the opulent experience of Vietnam Airlines' Business Class on a brief sojourn from Saigon to Singapore aboard the A321.

Aircraft Details

Get ready for a hop on Vietnam Airlines' A321 - a stalwart performer gracing both domestic and regional routes. With a fleet of 62 Airbus A321s under its wing, comprising both A321neo and A321ceo variants, the Vietnamese carrier presents a sturdy workhorse.

For this specific flight, we are led by the seasoned VN-A601 - an A321-200 with a dozen years under its wings, equipped with 16 Business Class seats and 168 Economy Class seats.

Seats Ablaze with Comfort

As Business Class seats, the recliners may not roar the luxurious invitations of the Cirrus long-haul seats aboard our previous flight (you can discover their charms here!), but they serve their purpose more than adequately for a short regional adventure.

Each of the 16 plush Business Class recliners exhibits a generous 45 inches of legroom, a 10-inch recline, and extendable foot-and-leg rests. The seat's width is worth mentioning, providing ample elbow room throughout your flight.

Proudly displayed on the side of the seat is a control panel, allowing adjustments in flight. A sturdy, ergonomic tray table cleverly stows below the armrest when not in use.

As for in-flight entertainment (IFE), the VN A321s present an omission. No IFE screens are positioned either in Business or Economy class. However, we managed through the journey's meal service and takeoff/landing phases.

Flight Crew Service: The Coveted Cherry on Top

It's not just the reclining chairs that steal the show; the service provided by the impeccable cabin crew can make or break a flight experience – and on this flight, they elected the latter with verve.

Our flight beacon, the charming Minh Chau, swept passengers off their feet aboard the Saigon-to-Singapore trek. She shone with an exceptional blend of customer service and hospitality, especially during meal service. A divine token of her generous nature, she even offered me a sample of the alternative dish.

There's no denying the magic when a crew member, like Minh Chau, skilfully infuses a touch of warmth 40,000 feet above the ground, all without missing a beat.

A Delectable Meal Service

Few things tantalize the taste buds like a scrumptious meal while cavorting in the sky – and the Oriental Fish option served on this short-haul jaunt did not disappoint! Featuring a medley of tasty fish, enticing prawns, and flavorful vegetables cloaked in a rich, savory sauce, the dish positively dazzled.

The main course was accompanied by a refreshing garden salad, a fruit bowl for dessert, and, for the pièce de résistance, a basket of breads with buttery accompaniments. Passengers could quench their thirst with an assortment of beverages, including soft drinks, fruit juices, or spirited cocktails.

Beverages: A Toast to Tranquility

Takeoff time provided an ideal opportunity for passengers to partake in a traditional pre-flight drink. The libation options spanned alcoholic beverages and honey-sweet concoctions. Steering clear of the alcohol, I opted for the latter, and the unconventional choice proved to be a heavenly decision, setting the perfect tone for the flight.

Coffee and Tea: Sunset Sips

Rounding out this culinary marvel, the delightful crew presented a coffee and tea service before the journey's descent. As I relaxed and absorbed the panorama of drifting clouds with a hot beverage in hand, I knew I'd farewelled a truly remarkable flight.

The Enlightened Voyage Continues: Vietnam Airlines' LotuStar WiFi and In-Flight Entertainment

While Vietnam Airlines' A321s forgo their traditional IFE screens – yes, not even passengers in Business Class are granted these luxuries – the carrier makes amends by enabling in-flight entertainment access via the mobile-based LotuStar WiFi. Travellers can connect to this portal and enjoy content usually reserved for seat-back screens.

The Lavatory: A Pristine Sanctuary

The VN A321 lavatory is a simple sanctuary, cozy, neat, and well-appointed for a brief sojourn. Given the aircraft's short-haul purpose, facilitiesatisfy appetites, if sparsely adorned. Yet Business Class passengers benefit from access to a separate, more refined lavatory.

Complimentary Blankets Aplenty

In a nod to passenger comfort, each flyer is gifted a warm blanket. Ideal for the journey ahead, the length and thickness were just right, rendering them perfect for a short escapade like this one.

Amenities: A Luxury for Tomorrow's Aviators

Given the flight's brevity, passengers were not treated to a Business Class amenity kit.

Fare Policies: A Balanced Approach Wins

Vietnam Airlines faces fierce opposition on the exceedingly popular Singapore-to-Ho Chi Minh City route. The airline offers a tantalizing Business Class package, roughly $727, a reasonable price tag given the enticing benefits one can reap when selecting Vietnam Airlines' Business offering.

Compared to the Competition

Passengers can select from two Business Class fare categories, each with its own unique perks:

  1. Business Classic: Standard privileges
  2. Business Flex: Additional mileage benefits and reduced fees for cancellations, refunds, and ticket changes

Singapore Airlines takes on fierce rivalry in this endeavor, offering a comparable Business Class experience – yet generally at a slightly higher fee. Behind the Singaporean giant, budget airline Scoot, while unequipped to compete in the Business Class sphere, boasts a healthy economy offering, while VietJet showcases a SkyBoss fare class, a Premium Economy alternative, but not a true Business Class product. Ultimately, weighing fares and benefits against one another will help determine the ideal choice for your short Asiatic escapade.

Tan Son Nhat Airport: A Gateway Abound With Charm

At Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat, Vietnam Airlines' hub hums alongside with robust competition. Two separate lounges welcome Business Class passengers, SkyTeam Alliance First/Business passengers, and LotusMiles Gold/Platinum/Million Miler members, offering an enticing sanctuary before your flight. The lounges exemplify the inventive creativity pouring out of Vietnam, with their serene atmosphere and verdant furnishings creating a striking first impression.

Food and Beverage Selection: A Flavorful Shelter

While not cradling Michelin-starred dishes, the lounge's menu caters perfectly to the traveler's need for a quick bite before embarking on their flight. Options include savory Asian delicacies, fresh fruit, local sweet pastries, and even a hot breakfast.

My personal favorite was the shower facilities, providing the perfect opportunity to rejuvenated after a long day of travels – a divine sanctuary indeed!
