In the heart of Oia, a charming town on the island of Santorini, the historic property of Canaves Ena reopened its doors in 2024, transforming into a boutique hotel. This gem, belonging to the esteemed Chaidemenos family, offers guests a unique experience with breathtaking views of the caldera and the island's legendary sunsets.

The Chaidemenos family, native to Santorini but residing in Athens, have a rich history of transforming their family's caves into hotels. This tradition dates back to the early 1980s when they began creating accommodation from these ancient dwellings.

Santorini, part of the Cyclades, is renowned for its distinctive landscape. Widows in black, rugged fishermen, undulating white houses built into the cliffside, and the caldera—a water-filled crater formed 3,600 years ago by a volcanic eruption—are all part of the island's captivating charm.

During my visit, I found myself in the quaint taverna Armeni in Ammoudi port, where I savoured grilled seafood and recognised the location from a past visit with my family. The taste of tender pork souvlaki, enjoyed on a whitewashed step overlooking the sea, was a memorable moment.

The island's premier winemaker, Sigalas, offers high-quality wines in a tranquil, contemplative atmosphere. Breakfast conversations took place under an al-fresco setting, surrounded by 700-year-old olive trees. The scent of jasmine and a traditional dish called kagianas added to the delightful experience.

A catamaran tour around the caldera was arranged, offering a soothing swim at the hot springs. Despite Santorini's reputation for overcrowding, specific legislation has helped it resist overdevelopment.

My stay in Oia provided a sense of escapism with a twist. Engaging with the village, the sea, and the past, I developed a strong affection for the rugged landscape. The streets of Oia were busy but not congested during my visit.

I had the pleasure of staying at Canaves Epitome, which opened in 2018. The glamour there was warm and earthy, rather than white-hot pretentious. My favourite photo from the trip was taken in Santorini, while riding a mule up a steep incline wearing a blue blazer and clogs.

Markos, a member of the Chaidemenos family, is committed to preserving and promoting the authentic Santorini of his childhood. The family's hotel properties around the island are known for their chic interpretations of the local architectural vernacular.

My first visit to the Greek Islands was when I was 13, specifically the Greek Island of Santorini. This recent trip brought back memories of that initial journey, reminding me of the enchantment that Santorini holds, and the enduring allure of its unique beauty.
