Disregarding Advisories, German Family Ventures into the Alps

In the Austrian Tennen Mountains, a family of five from Baden-Württemberg ventured on a hiking excursion, disregarding advice from a local resident. The incident led to a distress call in the dead of night.

A German family near Heidelberg was safely rescued from the Austrian Tennen Mountains (Salzburg province) early Saturday morning. The family, composed of parents and children aged 8, 10, and 14, found themselves stranded during their attempted mountain traverse.

Having set off from the Ellmau hut in Werfenweng (Pongau) on Friday, the family intended to reach the Solden hut via the Hochthron ladder, around 2,500 meters above sea level. Disregarding warnings about their ill-equipped state and the old snowfields, they proceeded despite the advice from the Ellmau hut's keeper against the challenging and lengthy seven-hour tour.

By 8:30 a.m., the family had started their journey, but as night fell, the father repeatedly called the keeper, announcing a delayed arrival. At 11:00 pm, he finally contacted the emergency number, revealing their location at the Tauern saddle (2,100 meters) and their inability to proceed further.

Eleven mountain rescuers from Werfen locals climbed up to the family and secured them on ropes over old snowfields until they reached the hut at 3:15 am, ensuring the family's safe arrival. The operation leader, Stefan Koller, commented that the family was chilled, and they were provided with warm clothing during the rescue.

The family lacked essential equipment for the hike, having neither rain gear nor a headlamp or a bivouac bag. Koller stated that the family had been on the move for 17 hours and were unaware of the danger. He emphasized the importance of careful planning, considering one's skill level, weather conditions, and snow situation before embarking on a mountain tour.

The incident underscores the necessity of heeding local advice, having proper equipment, realistic planning, continuous training, and seeking professional help when needed, to maintain safety during mountain hikes. Ignoring warnings and being ill-equipped significantly increases the risk of accidents and perilous mountain rescue operations.
