Duo of Polish Cyclists Discover Tranquility Pedaling on Frozen Balkhash Lake

Crunching Through Frozen Tundra: A Daring Cycling Expedition Across the Balkhash Lake

How'd you fancy a bike ride on a frozen lake? Sounds bizarre, right? But that's exactly what two daring Polish cyclists, Ryszard Jakubowski and Jakub Rybicki, set out to do when they embarked on a two-week journey to pedal the entire length of Kazakhstan's Lake Balkhash back in February.

Just take a gander at their expedition. Photos from Jakub Rybicki paint a picture of sheer tranquility as they glide through a vast expanse of crystal-clear ice, gazing out at the infinite horizon. Sounds like a dream, ain't it? But it wasn't all sunshine and roses.

Facing the Elements

Lake Balkhash, nestled in southeastern Kazakhstan, is one of Central Asia's largest lakes, known for its peculiar characteristic: its western part harbors fresh water, while the eastern part is brimming with salt. In the winter months, this beautiful spectacle freezes solid, offering people the unique opportunity to ski, run, and yes, even cycle on its surface.

But just because it's possible doesn't mean it's easy. Jakub Rybicki, no stranger to long-distance cycling, was drawn to try his hand at cycling across this frozen behemoth. The challenge was irresistible: an uncharted territory eager to be conquered on two wheels.

But little did he know that the one thing he hadn't prepared for would be snow.

Their expedition commenced at the northern shore of Lake Balkhash, near the village of Aktogai. But as they set foot on the ice, they were greeted by a thick layer of snow. Weeks of meticulous planning and preparation were threatening to crumble.

"Our bikes were built for ice, but with that layer of snow, it became a nightmare," Jakubowski admitted.

Putting up a Fight

The duo tried to persist, cycling for a day before spending another eight hours or so pushing the bikes through the snow. But after two grueling days of little progress, they realized the conditions weren't going to change anytime soon.

So, with heavy hearts, they made the difficult decision to abandon their dream and hit the road instead, hoping for better conditions further ahead.

Origins of an Adventurist

But how did this whole thing even start?

For Jakubowski, it was a gradual progression. He'd already walked thousands of kilometers across deserts in Jordan, traipsed picturesque trails in the Balkans, and mountain trekked before deciding to give cycling a shot.

"It was a trip around Poland that sparked it all," Jakubowski shared. "I decided to see my own country before setting out to explore the world. And that's how it all began."

Rybicki, on the other hand, was no newcomer to cycling. He'd pedaled roughly most of Europe, even attempting a coast-to-coast crossing of Baikal Lake in Siberia.

But it wasn't until he attempted the Arctic Circle trail in Greenland that he truly fell in love with the chilly conditions.

"I realized then that cycling in cold environments was my kind of adventure," Rybicki admitted.

Remembrances of an Epic Journey

For Jakubowski, the scenic delights of cycling through the frozen Lake Balkhash were unmatched as a first-time experience.

"The vastness of the lake and the feeling of being all alone out there, sleeping in a tent, spending the night on the lake—that was something special!" Jakubowski gushed.

But it wasn't all about the views. Meeting the locals was what truly made the journey worthwhile. One such encounter was with Andrey, a former soldier from Priozyorsk who had served in Poland. Their shared history sparked hours of heartfelt conversation and left a lasting impact.

Hoping for a Return

Although their initial attempt was foiled by the elements, both Jakubowski and Rybicki remain undeterred. They plan to return one day and conquer the Lake Balkhash ice on two wheels.

And who knows? With enough determination and a little bit of luck, they just might make it happen. Stay tuned!

Enrichment Data:

  • Lakes in northern states like Michigan (Lakes Mitchell and Cadillac) are known for stable ice suitable for winter sports like ice fishing and ice cycling, given the cold climate and ice thickness.
  • Northern Canadian lakes, especially those in regions like Banff National Park, may have ice-covered lakes well into the winter season. Lakes like Moraine Lake experience ice melt by late spring and are better suited for spring biking near the lake rather than full ice cycling on the frozen surface.
  • Lake Champlain in Vermont offers scenic cycling routes around its shores and islands. While primarily known for biking along cleared paths, its colder winters and large surface area mean parts could freeze sufficiently for ice cycling depending on conditions.
  • Some additional U.S. lakes with strong winter activity include Bear Lake (UT/ID) and the Washington lakes (Chelan, Washington), but their winter ice cycling suitability depends heavily on local ice conditions and climate.
  • Lakes in polar regions, such as those in Arctic Canada, Alaska, and Greenland, feature long and harsh winters with thick, stable ice cover for extended periods, making them inherently suitable for ice cycling if accessibility and safety are managed. These regions are less documented in casual recreational contexts, but their extreme cold and reliable ice formation make them ideal environments for ice cycling enthusiasts experienced in polar conditions.

Despite the setback with snow, the duo dreams of returning to Lake Balkhash to experience the adventure-travel of cycling across its frozen surface, just as they had envisioned. The dream of pedaling through the tranquil, expansive ice, immersed in the peaceful landscape, still lingers in their minds. Meanwhile, other frozen lakes in regions like northern Michigan, Banff National Park, and Lake Champlain offer potential opportunities for ice cycling, given stable ice conditions and careful planning.
