Expanded Stay Granted: Venice Extends Ticket Sales for 60 More Days
In the heart of Italy, the enchanting city of Venice continues to draw visitors from around the globe. Yet, managing the influx of tourists has become a significant challenge for the city administration. One of the measures introduced to tackle this issue is the access fee, known as contributo di accesso in Italian.
The access fee, currently in a trial phase, is intended to help manage mass tourism in Venice. This year, more than 720,000 day visitors registered in the city, generating approximately 5.4 million euros. The city administration decided that in 2026, there will be entrance fees charged to day visitors for a total of 60 days between early April and late July. This marks an increase from previous years, with the access fee period extending longer.
However, critics argue that the access fee has little impact on deterring visitors from coming to Venice. Despite the cost, the historic center of Venice continues to be home to approximately 50,000 people. Hotel guests staying for a longer period in Venice are exempt from the daily access fee, but they do have to pay accommodation tax.
It's important to note that Venice is an expensive city. A cup of cappuccino on St. Mark's Square can cost up to 17 euros. The access fee, while a significant addition to the cost of visiting, may not be enough to deter tourists given the city's allure.
The next round of the access fee in Venice begins on April 3, 2026, and ends on July 26. The city administration will continue to monitor the impact of the access fee on tourism and adjust its strategies as necessary to preserve the beauty and charm of Venice for generations to come.
