listen up, folks, United Airlines' Polaris Business Class is like the cream of the crop when it comes to North American business class products, and recent upgrades have given it a significant edge over competitors, such as British Airways' Business Class. Let's dive in and talk about what sets the Polaris experience apart.
The Boarding Pass to Serenity
Polaris is United's premier product, available on their entire wide-body fleet. With the Polaris update in October 2023, more than just seats were revamped; the airline also opened Polaris lounges, offering access to the best possible amenities for Business Class, long-haul ticket holders.
London Heathrow's Polaris lounge boasts a full-service bar, a TV room, and numerous private booths for phone calls or Zoom meetings. The cabin configuration varies depending on the aircraft, but on the mid-morning Heathrow to Newark route, the best seats are the odd-numbered A and L ones, next to the windows, offering more privacy and a forward-facing orientation. The overall design is sleek and modern, with a light grey and bright navy color scheme (much like an old school uniform).
The Comfort Zone
To get cozy in your Polaris seat, you'll have to be somewhat flexible, as the openings can be quite narrow. Nevertheless, once you're settled, the Polaris cabin offers a comfortable, cocoon-like environment that's perfect for catching 40 winks. The Polaris seat itself reclines into a comfortable bed, with well-thought-out details like a marble-effect side table and a lumbar support pillow.
The real star of the Polaris show, however, is the bedding, developed in collaboration with Saks Fifth Avenue. The offerings include a pillow, duvet, day blanket, and a mattress, all of high quality and more than capable of providing a cozy, snug sleep experience. Martha Stewart even endorses the Polaris bed-making process!
Unfortunately, during my return journey, my seat got stuck in the fully flat position, rendering it temporarily inaccessible. But with a little help from my fellow travelers, I found a temporary solution, and we all touched down safely.
The Gastronomic Journey
The food in Polaris is, well, nothing special. It's not the worst I've ever had, but it's far from the best. There's a selection of starters, mains, and desserts, and you have the option to stagger your courses if you wish. The presentation is lovely, with nice ceramic pots, heavy glassware, and Heinz condiments, and the Champagne offered is Laurent-Perrier, setting United apart as the only US airline to serve it.
A Cut Above the Rest
US airlines generally leave their European counterparts in the dust when it comes to communication. The apps tend to be more informative, and you receive more direct updates about your flight. United's amenity kits, designed in partnership with wellness brand Therabody, also feel more thoughtfully curated than many competitors' offerings, with items such as an eye serum, refreshing spray, hand cream, and more.
What We'd Change
However, United's Business Class offerings seem a bit dated compared to British Airways' recent updates to its Business Class product. A little less gray (which can show signs of wear) and a few modern touches would breathe some fresh life into the Polaris experience, keeping it competitive in the global aviation market.
