Experienced life aboard a sailboat for over twelve months, ultimately deciding to abandon our previous lifestyle
===========================================================================================
For over a year and a half, a brave individual embarked on an extraordinary adventure, trading the familiarity of land for the rhythm of the sea. Living on a 13-meter long sailboat, they navigated both the challenges and rewards that come with this unique lifestyle.
The Challenges
Living on a sailboat presented significant hurdles. Limited space and convenience made simple daily activities, such as showering and grocery shopping, more challenging. Tight quarters called for careful organization and minimalism.
Living at anchor could be problematic due to concerns about shifting winds, dragging anchor, weather changes, and proximity to other boats. Finding a permanent slip or dock with access to shore and amenities was often difficult and costly.
Sailboats typically lack permanent systems like hot water or air conditioning, requiring the continuous running of a noisy and fuel-intensive generator. Battery management was a complex issue, with high costs and trade-offs among different battery types. Equipment like anchors, windlasses, and electrical systems required ongoing maintenance and technical skill.
Slow travel, with sailboats typically moving at 6 to 7 knots, meant destinations took hours to reach, limiting mobility and spontaneity.
The Rewards
Despite these challenges, living on a sailboat offered numerous benefits. The mobility and lifestyle freedom it provided allowed the individual to cruise and explore diverse coastal locations, appealing to those seeking adventure and a mobile lifestyle.
The reduced living costs, while boat maintenance had its expenses, often outweighed typical housing costs such as rent or mortgage, utilities, and property taxes.
Being on the water daily deepened the individual's connection with the marine environment and outdoor life. The liveaboard and cruising communities also fostered strong social ties and a shared ethos around sustainable, simple living.
The Personal Experience
The individual missed celebrating birthdays and holidays for a year while sailing, as well as sharing experiences with friends and family, such as trying ice cream with nieces and sharing local hot sauces with a best friend. They experienced homesickness more often than expected.
Simple tasks like showering and grocery shopping were more difficult on the boat. A thick layer of salt and grease in their hair made them self-conscious and uncomfortable. Soap didn't lather well in the sea, and salt stuck to their skin and hair.
Despite these difficulties, the individual learned a lot from the sailing experience, which they find worth the challenges. They went up to a month without a freshwater shower, but carried memories of beautiful beaches and diverse cultures from their sailing journey.
In August 2022, the individual moved into an apartment, marking the end of their extended sea voyage. They look forward to the next chapter on land, but carry with them the lessons and memories from their time spent on the water.
