New Major Chemistry Research Center to Drive Sustainable Innovation in Central Germany

The federal and state governments have announced the establishment of a significant research center, the Center for the Transformation of Chemistry (CTC), in Delitzsch, Saxony, and the nearby Merseburg in Saxony-Anhalt. This initiative aims to accelerate the transformation of the chemical industry away from fossil fuels towards a circular economy by developing new, sustainable chemical processes and materials.

The CTC, which was officially announced at a signing ceremony on Thursday in Delitzsch near Leipzig, will focus on research fields such as recycling technologies and data-driven chemistry for sustainable chemical production. The center has already started its first research projects in 2025, with a workforce of 61 scientists from 12 nations working at its two locations.

By 2038, the CTC plans to expand to employ up to 1,000 researchers, making it a major hub for chemical innovation in Central Germany. Local government officials consider it a "lighthouse for cutting-edge research and technology transfer" in the region.

The center is funded by the federal government as part of the coal phase-out strategy, with a total investment of up to 1.1 billion euros over the coming years to cover infrastructure and research costs.

The project aims to create around 1,000 high-quality research jobs by 2038. Besides direct employment, it will stimulate the broader regional economy through innovation and technology transfer to local industries, supporting structural transformation after the coal industry decline.

The CTC plays an important role in the structural transformation of the Leipzig/Delitzsch region, historically dependent on coal mining and chemical industries. It supports the transition to sustainable industrial practices, contributing to regional economic diversification, environmental goals, and modernization of the local economy.

By attracting international scientists and fostering innovation, the CTC enhances Saxony’s profile as a future-focused science and technology location. Saxony’s Minister President Michael Kretschmer considers the signing of the key points a significant milestone, while Reiner Haseloff, Minister President of Saxony-Anhalt, highlights the center’s importance for surrounding industries like automotive and chip manufacturing.

Reiner Haseloff also emphasizes the need to consider the Mitteldeutsche region around Delitzsch, divided by state borders, as an economic area for positive development. The center's construction will take place on the grounds of a former sugar factory in Delitzsch, with the main site located in the city itself.

The CTC aims to combine tradition and modernity, signifying a future for the chemical industry as it stands at a crossroads. Reiner Haseloff states that the center signifies a future for the industry, while the center is expected to create 700 jobs in Saxony and 300 in Saxony-Anhalt.
