The Commune by the Great Wall, a must-visit destination for history buffs, is located in the foothills of the Shuiguan Mountains in the Yanqing District, known as the "summer capital of Beijing" for its cool weather. This unique retreat is approximately an hour's drive from Beijing and within walking distance of the Great Wall of China, making it a perfect getaway for those seeking a blend of history, culture, and adventure.

The Commune was designed by a group of 12 award-winning architects from Asia, including Ai Weiwei, who served as the landscape planner. Other architects involved in the project include Shigeru Ban, Gary Chang, and Kanika R'kul. The architects were instructed to use local materials and make the houses blend in with the surrounding environment, creating a harmonious and sustainable living space.

The Shuiguan section of the Great Wall, a 20-minute walk from The Commune, was built to prevent the Mongols from invading Beijing. This section offers steep steps to climb, but the effort is rewarded with great east-facing views. For those seeking a more leisurely experience, Badaling, one of the most-popular sections of the Great Wall, offers two cable cars and a toboggan, providing breathtaking views of the Great Wall and the surrounding mountains.

The Great Wall Museum in Badaling takes visitors through the wall's history in nine exhibition halls. In late 2025, the Great Wall Museum in Badaling is set to reopen as a national museum after extensive renovations.

The Great Wall of China, one of the "New Seven Wonders of the World" and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stretches about 5,500 miles across northern China, from the Liaoning province in the east to the Gansu province in the west. A unique camping adventure on the Great Wall of China can be experienced, though it can cost upwards of $300.

Whether you're seeking history, adventure, or a peaceful retreat, The Commune by the Great Wall offers an unforgettable experience. With its unique design, proximity to the Great Wall, and stunning views, it's no wonder that it's a popular getaway from Beijing.
