Impact of Six-Year Construction on Tauerna Motorway for Vacationers
The Austrian motorway operator, Asfinag, has announced the largest maintenance project in its history. From 2027 to 2033, a six-year renovation of the A10 motorway between Salzburg and Carinthia will take place, affecting travelers heading from Bavaria towards the Mediterranean.
The Renovation Project
The renovation project, estimated to cost around 700 million euros, will involve the renewal of approximately 25 kilometers of the route. The Katschberg Tunnel and the Tauern Tunnel will undergo renovation as well, with the major construction site expected to begin in 2027 and end in 2033.
However, the Lueg Bridge renovation is not included in this project, as stated by Asfinag. The current state of the Lueg Bridge on the Brenner motorway to Italy is in a state of exception, but no new cost estimates for its renovation are provided in the article.
Traffic Disruptions and Alternative Routes
During the construction, traffic jams are expected, especially on weekends with high traffic volumes. Asfinag and the ADAC advise against traveling on the main travel days of the summer holidays. Neither Asfinag nor the ADAC recommend an alternative route for travelers.
Motorists are advised to consider the following alternative routes to avoid delays:
Alternative Routes
- Via the A8 and A12 to the A22 and Further South
- This route involves going east around the construction area, using the A8 from Germany into Austria via the A12 and then connecting to the A22 towards Italy. This route adds about an hour compared to the direct route due to the detour.
- Via the A9 to the A2 and Further South
- Traveling southeast from Bavaria through the A9 to the A2 in Austria can be a viable alternative. This route is relatively straightforward and doesn’t add significant time if the A10 is heavily congested.
- Via the A1 and A2 to the A4 and Further South
- Using the A1 to connect to the A2 in Austria can also be a good option. It involves a bit more mileage but might be faster depending on traffic conditions.
Estimated Travel Times
- Direct Route (Typically): About 4-5 hours from Bavaria to the Mediterranean via the A10, depending on traffic.
- Alternative Route 1 (A8 to A22): Approximately 5-6 hours.
- Alternative Route 2 (A9 to A2): About 4.5-5.5 hours, depending on traffic along the A9 and A2.
- Alternative Route 3 (A1 to A2): Roughly 5-6 hours.
Notes
- Traffic Conditions: The travel times are estimates and can vary significantly based on traffic conditions, roadworks, and other factors.
- Updates and Alerts: It’s essential to check for real-time traffic updates and road condition alerts before starting your journey.
- Alternative Modes: Consider using trains or buses if traffic is expected to be heavy to avoid congestion.
For the most accurate and up-to-date traffic information, using a GPS or online mapping service like Google Maps or Waze is recommended during your journey.
The ADAC warns of traffic disruptions on the route towards Croatia during the summer holidays. Traffic will be narrowed to one lane and speed limits will be introduced during the construction. Only one lane is passable on the Lueg Bridge until 2030.
It's important to note that the suggested alternative routes offer only a slight time saving, but they may involve longer distances and higher toll costs. The article does not mention any impact of the Lueg Bridge renovation on the operating and safety technology.
