G20 Emphasizes Digital and Green Transformation for Sustainable Tourism

The G20, under Italy's presidency, is focusing on the future of global tourism, advocating for digital and green transformation as core strategies to create sustainable, resilient, and inclusive tourism sectors worldwide.

The G20 Rome Guidelines for the Future of Tourism emphasize these initiatives as a means to shape the tourism industry, leveraging digital technologies to enhance tourist experiences, operational efficiencies, and data-driven decision-making, while simultaneously advancing environmentally sustainable practices that reduce tourism’s carbon footprint and promote conservation.

Italy, hosting significant global tourism events such as the WTTC Summit in Rome, is advancing tourism with strong sustainability and innovation goals. The country aims to sustain record-breaking international spending and employment growth by integrating digital and green strategies.

The 2025 G20 agenda, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni playing a leading role, underlines a commitment to sustainable development, energy transition, and the social impacts of tourism, directly relating to the green and digital transformation pillars in global tourism.

European and Italian authorities also emphasize sustainability and competitiveness in tourism, supporting alignment with the EU Sustainable Tourism Strategy, which promotes reducing environmental impacts and fostering social sustainability through innovative and intelligent tourism management.

The UNWTO Recommendations, presented at the 2021 G20 Tourism Ministers Meeting, present main lines of action and frontrunning initiatives for achieving greater sustainability in the sector. The UNWTO Recommendations for the Transition to a Green Travel and Tourism Economy are identified as a key resource for advancing progress.

The current crisis presents an opportunity to rethink and restart tourism, with a focus on guiding the sector towards greater sustainability. The G20 is advocating for the green transformation of the tourism sector as part of its strategies.

UNWTO will continue to work with the Italian G20 Presidency, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia in advancing the contribution of tourism to the G20 objectives. The Recommendations outline steps to help tourism recover from the worst crisis in its history safely and responsibly.

The Secretary-General of the UNWTO, Zurab Pololikashvili, emphasized the need for coordination at the highest level to establish common, harmonized criteria for easing travel restrictions and investing in safe travel systems. The focus is on ensuring fair access to opportunities from greater innovation in the sector.

The G20, under Italy's leadership, is also focusing on building resilience in the tourism sector to withstand future shocks. Millions of livelihoods continue to be at risk due to the ongoing crisis, and the emphasis on safe mobility in its tourism strategies is crucial for the recovery and growth of the industry.

The UNWTO Recommendations showcase tourism businesses and destinations leading the way in achieving greater sustainability, providing a blueprint for the future of responsible and sustainable tourism.
