Karstadt to Transform into a Creative "SuedStadt": A Venue for Music and Art

Check out the ex-Karstadt building, dude! It's gonna be a rad "SuedStadt" thanks to Netzwerk SuedKultur's vision. These guys want to create some killer spaces for music and art in the old Karstadt deparment store.
When Karstadt shut its Harburg branch back in June '23, it seemed like we'd be stuck with a massive vacancy. But in April '24, the city scored the ex-Karstadt department store – kinda like they won the lottery! The Landesbetrieb Immobilienmanagement und Grundvermögen (LIG) grabbed it, and the former store's owner made a deal out of court. Score!
Fast forward, and it looks like things are moving! By 2032, there'll be temporary use for the building. In October, Hamburg's finance senator, Andreas Dressel, pledged 300k euros to a museum project and a multifunctional room for the new year.
SuedKultur is gaining momentum too – they're on the hunt for creative minds who need a place for their art! Musicians of all genres, from bands to choirs, are wanted. And visual artists – that includes painters – are warmly invited to touch base. The project offers enough space for studios, allowing artists to create and exchange ideas.
"The potential for a new, creative 'SuedStadt' in the former Karstadt department store is massive!" said Jan Schröder, SuedKultur’s spokesperson. "These facilities could offer a long-term perspective for the cultural scene in southern Hamburg."
