The Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) has signed up to UK Music's Local Music Action Charter, demonstrating a shared commitment to recognising music as a catalyst for inclusive access, vibrant local economies, and creative opportunity.

This move comes as part of UK Music's Hometown Glory report into music tourism, which highlighted the significant impact of the music industry on the UK's economy. In 2024, a staggering 23.5 million music tourists visited the UK, a 23% increase from 2023's total of 19.2 million. Among these tourists, 21.9 million were from the UK itself, marking a 21% rise from the previous year.

Moreover, the number of overseas music tourists increased by 62% in 2024, with a total of 1.6 million visitors compared to 2023's one million. These tourists supported 72,000 full-time equivalent jobs in the live music sector, an 16% increase from the 2023 total of 62,000.

UK Music's Local Music Action Charter, launched as part of the Hometown Glory report, aims to boost local economies and support creative communities. It offers practical advice on developing local music scenes to boost economies, drive employment, and support creatives.

Tom Kiehl, UK Music's chief executive, expressed enthusiasm about the GMCA signing up to the Local Music Action Charter. He looks forward to working with the GMCA and aligning with their work on this important agenda.

It is hoped that other local councils will join the Local Music Action Charter to create a network of areas belonging to the UK Music scheme. By doing so, they can help ensure music thrives for everyone across their communities, while supporting artists and boosting local economies.

The Greater Manchester Combined Authority believes that the Local Music Action Charter will contribute to its regional plans for music. By working together, they can create a thriving music scene that benefits everyone in the region.
