The small village of Wacken, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, is gearing up for its annual heavy metal pilgrimage known as the Wacken Open Air (W:O:A). This year marks the 35th edition of the festival, which has evolved from a local gathering into one of the largest and most renowned metal festivals in Europe.

Since its inception in 1990, Wacken Open Air has grown significantly. What started as a small-scale event with a few bands and 800 visitors has now transformed into a massive celebration attracting tens of thousands of metal fans from over 80 countries[1]. This year, all 85,000 tickets for the 34th Wacken Open Air, scheduled for 30 July to 2 August, were sold out by the end of September[2].

The festival's success can be attributed to several key factors. Firstly, the atmosphere, largely created by the fans and the local community, has played a significant role in shaping Wacken Open Air's unique identity[3]. Secondly, the festival's expansion of programming to include a broad spectrum of metal subgenres has helped it gain international recognition, drawing a wide range of notable bands and artists[1].

The Wacken Open Air is held on an agricultural field in Wacken, and the organizers have no plans to change this despite the associated risks[4]. This decision has contributed to the festival's authenticity and has helped it maintain its close connection with its roots.

The festival's founders, Thomas Jensen and Holger Hübner, organized the event as a party for themselves and their friends[5]. Today, the festival is part-owned by its co-founders, who are still involved in its construction to about 31 percent[6]. Jensen, the 59-year-old co-founder of Wacken Open Air, plans to celebrate the 35th festival next year[7].

This year's lineup promises a diverse array of bands, with Guns N' Roses as the headliners[8]. Other expected bands include Gojira, Papa Roach, Machine Head, Saltatio Mortis, Apocalyptica, and Michael Schenker[9]. As tradition dictates, Jensen has hinted at a few surprises for the upcoming festival, which he will reveal during the event[10].

Wacken Open Air's success has had a positive impact on Schleswig-Holstein's tourism. The festival shapes the region's image as a welcoming music destination and opens up new, international, and music-loving target groups for the industry[11]. In fact, more than a third of Wacken Open Air visitors consider a holiday on the coast of Schleswig-Holstein after the festival, benefiting hotels and catering throughout the region[12].

For those who missed out on tickets, there's still a chance to attend through the official ticket exchange due to possible cancellations[13]. However, for those who can't make it this year, rest assured that the Wacken Open Air will continue to thrive, celebrating heavy metal music and its community for years to come.
