Let's chat about Burano, Italy - a hidden gem just north of Venice

Catch a water-taxi ride and unearth the colorful, picturesque town of Burano, Italy

An' ya know, pal, we took a darn reckless trip out to Burano, Italy last year during that muck called the Global Pandemic. Turns out, it wasn't folly, after all. This place is a beaut! Just a 40-minute spin north of Venice, Burano's a gem that's been held back just long enough for us common folk to marvel at.

Everyone's been clamoring to capture that gem of a pic with those multi-colored homes. The paint jobs are a kaleidoscope of pinks, blues, yellows, greens, purples - like a riotous rainbow. It's no wonder it's been branded an Instagram-worthy destination.

Travelling Italy in 2021

Italy's letting most travelers in again, American tourists included. But you'll need proof of vaccinations or a negative test result to get through the gates, mate. Fret not; there are plenty of accommodations, attractions, and tours open, and they've all got new health and safety protocols in place for ya. For the latest updates, head here.

Burano: An Italy Travel Guide

Wander around Burano, and you'll stumble across little old ladies hanging laundry and peering down at kids and tourists from their colorful windows with flower boxes. Early morning fishermen take out their boats, while locals roam around on foot, bike, or boat - just like Cave City of Matera.

So, why'd they paint the houses rainbow-bright? Seems they wanted fishermen to spot their homes better from the water and to distinguish property lines. Kudos to the residents because, blimey, they picked some top-notch colors! Population's hovering around 2,000 these days, and tourism's become the main source of income.

Things to Do in Burano

Apart from clicking some Insta-worthy pics, there's not much else to do on the island. But hey, isn't the scenery all the fun?

San Martino Church

The leaning bell tower of San Martino Church in the main square is the focal point of the island. You can see it from many parts of Burano, making it impossible to miss.

Seafood Delights

Got a hankerin' for seafood? Burano's the place to be. Grab some squid ink pasta or Italian seafood risotto for a truly fresh dining experience. The main street is lined with restaurants like Al Gatto Nero da Ruggero and Trattoria da Primo e Paolo.

Exploration Afoot

While Burano's got only a few main streets, there are hidden gems among the side streets. Get lost and find yourself a cozy, quiet corner.

Ferretin' out the Authentic Burano Lace

Burano is renowned for its intricate lacework, dating back to the 16th century. Originally, local women produced lace for export worldwide. It's a labor-intensive process involving multiple people; one group of seven ladies can create a small lace table centerpiece in a month!

Nowadays, the lace is mostly machine-made, but you can still find traditional lace makers like Emilia Burano and La Perla Gallery. Pop into the Museo de Murletto (the local lace museum) to delve deeper into the history of Burano lace.

Heading to Burano Island

You can't drive to Burano. Sadly, you're stuck with boats; private water taxis are pricey, or you can hop on the public Vaporetto (Number 12) from Fondament Nove in Venice. The journey takes about 40 minutes, and you might even stop by Murano on the way. A one-way Vaporetto ticket costs around €7.50, but a multi-trip pass saves you some dough.

Staying in Burano

If you're after a true Burano experience, consider staying overnight. The town comes alive after tourists leave, and you'll get the chance to mingle with locals. We bunked down at one of the coolest Airbnbs I've ever seen. The proprietor's Granny's stuff filled the place, and it felt like spending the night in a museum.
