New Train Service Resumes Between Oslo and Malmö, Paving the Way for Further Expansion
A long-awaited train service between Oslo and Malmö has resumed after a 20-year hiatus, marking an exciting development in Scandinavian rail travel. The service, operated by Vy, began running on July 14, 2025, coinciding with the opening of the Varberg Tunnel which improved capacity on the west coast line.
Initially, the service will operate on weekends year-round, with double daily departures planned for summer 2026. This new connection will also serve as an extension of the existing service between Oslo and Gothenburg.
As for the Oslo-Copenhagen route, SJ plans to run 3-5 daily high-speed trains once their new high-speed trains arrive. Additionally, Vy and Danish DSB are developing a direct service using new Talgo carriages, with potential operation around 2027 pending delivery of those trains. Private operator Snälltåget is also considering running its own trains on this route, indicating an exciting future for the corridor.
Details about the return of the Oslo-Copenhagen service will be revealed later in the spring, according to Erik Røhne, Executive Director of Vy Tog.

Passengers traveling from Malmo will have access to direct trains to Bergen and Trondheim after arriving in Oslo. This will make connections to Copenhagen and Hamburg easier from Oslo.
Tickets for the new service will be available for purchase in mid-April. The continuation of the service in future summers is contingent on its sales performance.
This new train service not only reconnects two major cities but also promotes environmentally friendly travel to Europe, as stated by Erik Røhne.
