Rediscovered Jackfruit Varieties Siddu and Shankara Showcased for Nutritional Value and Market Potential

Two hardy jackfruit varieties, Siddu and Shankara, are gaining attention for their commercial potential and nutritional benefits. These trees, suitable for various climates, have been traditionally valued in rural Indian diets but are now being rediscovered and organized for wider appreciation.

ICAR-IIHR, based in Southern Karnataka, led the rediscovery of jackfruit's value through surveys in the region. From 128 samples, two superior varieties were selected: Siddu and Shankara. Siddu, with coppery-red flakes and 25-30 bulbs per fruit, weighs around 2.44 kg. It's high in total carotenoids, lycopene, vitamin C, and phenolics, offering 4.43 mg/100 g, 1.12 mg/100 g, 6.48 mg/100 g, and 31.76 mg GAE/100 g respectively. Shankara, producing fruits of 2-5 kg with 60 sweet, crisp, and aromatic flakes, contains 5.83 mg of carotenoids and 2.26 mg of lycopene per 100 grams.

Both varieties hold great market potential due to their unique colors, nutritional content, and functional food properties. They could significantly contribute to farmers' incomes, with a revenue-sharing model ensuring 75% of sapling sales revenue goes directly to them.

The rediscovery and promotion of Siddu and Shankara jackfruits offer promising prospects for farmers and consumers alike. These hardy trees, with their exceptional nutritional profiles and market potential, could transform traditional rural diets into commercially viable and health-conscious choices.
