Rhode Island's benevolent judge Frank Caprio, renowned for his TV show 'Caught in Providence,' passes away at the age of 88.
Retired Providence Municipal Court Judge Frank Caprio, who became widely known for his televised hearings and advocacy for justice accessibility for low-income Americans, passed away on August 20, 2025, at the age of 88. The news of his death was announced through his official social media accounts.
Caprio, who grew up in Providence's Federal Hill neighbourhood as the second of three boys, was beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people. His bite-sized segments showcased a folksy tone and steady empathy, turning routine appearances into humane conversations.
Caprio's televised hearings, which often involved minor infractions such as traffic citations and noise complaints, drew more than 1 billion views. He was known for listening attentively to all parties involved and for inviting children to the bench to help weigh in on their parents' tickets.
One of Caprio's most memorable moments was when he listened to a woman whose son had been killed before dismissing her $400 in fines. His actions demonstrated his commitment to justice and his empathy towards those in need.
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee praised Caprio, saying he connected with the public in a meaningful way. McKee argued that Caprio showed how justice can be tempered with humanity. Caprio's longtime friend and business partner described him as "all around wonderful," while Caprio's family described him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.
In a Facebook video last week, Caprio asked people to "remember me in your prayers" as he shared that he had suffered a setback and was back in the hospital. Caprio's death was due to a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Caprio retired from the Providence Municipal Court in 2023 after nearly four decades on the bench. His retirement marked the end of an era for the court and for the city of Providence. Caprio will be sorely missed by many, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of those he helped and inspired.
