Farm Concerts Elevate Agricultural Landscapes in Baden-Württemberg's Dreisamtal
When the harmonious strains of country music waft over the verdant meadows of the Dreisamtal, a farm concert is likely underway. A prime example is the Fußenthomashof in Stegen.
A semi-circular seating arrangement, reminiscent of an amphitheater, adorns the hillside before the stage. The difference lies in the informal setup; the rows consist of folding chairs, blankets, and straw bales instead of conventional seats. Julian and his dedicated team are among many volunteers meticulously preparing for the farm concert on the Fußenthomashof, just a short distance from Freiburg. Cooks are arranging their repurposed coat hanger standing tables in front of the food truck "Frachtgut," while the Ketterer family attends to the house and farm, suppressing their growing excitement. Meanwhile, Patrick and Dominik, the vocalists of the band Rhinwaldsounds, are practicing backstage.

The Dreisamtal's farm concerts, conceived by Julian and his team in 2021, provide an innovative approach to showcasing local agriculture. According to Julian, 'In the Dreisamtal, many farms offer exceptional products. With the farm concerts, we created an experiential way to engage with these farms, allowing guests to meet the farming families and get a glimpse behind the scenes.' On the Fußenthomashof, for instance, visitors can explore a charming farm shop, meet pigs, horses, and a vast populace of chickens clucking and crowing in their enclosures.
Held annually at various locations in the valley, these events attract bands from far and wide. Some arrive from Vienna, while others, like Rhinwaldsounds, hail from the neighboring Ortenau district. Upcoming concerts have been planned for the following years as well. For now, though, the stage belongs to the Rhinwaldsounds. As the first guests begin to arrive, the group retreats backstage.
Some visitors cycle through the summer, while others stroll down the long valley road from nearby villages. Families with children make up a significant portion of the audience, and a few dog-owning couples have even brought their pets to join the festivities. The initial seating area fills quickly, and the queue at the food truck lengthens. Freesia sandwiches prove popular, but they ignite thirst amongst the audience. Julian and his colleagues serve regional beverages from behind the sales counter, including Freiburg beer, Bad Dürrheimer water, and Ebner apple soda.

As the hillside amphitheater swells with audience members right up to the last cherry tree, the concert commences. After a warm welcome from Julian, the Rhinwaldsounds take the stage. The band intertwines Alemannic tunes with catchy hits such as "Wurschtsalat" and "Eigene tomate," eliciting infectious laughter and applause from the receptive audience. As the sun dips behind the hills and bathes the stage in a warm glow, even the farm manager steps onto the stage to join the band for a duet dedicated to her family.
