After the budget airline Ryanair pulled out from Danish airport Billund in March over the nation's air travel tax, passenger numbers took a hit. April saw a whopping 31.4% drop in traffic, with 217,713 travelers passing through compared to 314,236 in the same period last year[1].

Hey Travel Lovers!

"We anticipated this decline and are on track with our projections for the rest of the year," shared Billund Airport CEO, Jan Hessellund, in a press release[1].

Ryanair announced its decision to close a two-aircraft base at Billund and cancel all its 24 services in February, blaming the Danish air travel tax[1]. Since then, the airport has been negotiating deals with other airlines to compensate for the loss.

Among the new routes introduced is a flight to London Gatwick with airline Norwegian[1]. Furthermore, several Spanish destinations were added to the airport's offerings.

Jean-Pierreklaus Holm, Billund Airport's head of programs, marketing, and communication, shed some light on the situation last month in an interview with news wire Ritzau[1]. "Without Ryanair, we've lost about 30% of our passenger traffic," said Holm. "But it also creates an opportunity for other low-cost airlines."

Other airlines capitalizing on the open slots at Billund include Wizz Air with routes to Poland, Lithuania, and Moldova, and Air Greenland with two weekly flights to Nuuk[1]. SAS has also resumed its domestic service to Copenhagen with four daily departures.

Lastly, Vueling is set to offer a service from Billund to Barcelona[1].

Fun Facts

  1. Air Greenland: Another player in the Scandinavian skies, Air Greenland offers flights connecting Greenland's various islands[3].
  2. SAS: Scandinavian Airlines, or SAS, provides domestic and international services across Scandinavia and beyond[4].
