Secret Fortress: The Undiscovered Historical Diamond

In the picturesque Solan district of Himachal Pradesh, nestled among the majestic Himalayas, lies the historic hill fort of Arki. Known for its unique Mughal and Rajput architecture and exquisite Pahari art, Arki Fort is a must-visit destination for history and art enthusiasts alike.

Built between 1695 and 1700 by Rana Prithvi Singh, a descendant of Rana Sabha Chand, Arki Fort stands as one of the oldest forts in Himachal Pradesh. Over the years, it has served as the capital of the earlier hill-state of Baghal and was even ruled by the Nepalese army during the Gurkha wars from 1809 to 1815 AD.

The fort, which includes the Arki Palace, also called Padam Lakshmi Niwas, operates partially as a heritage hotel since 2010. The ownership remains largely private with heirs of the Baghal rajas still residing in part of the complex.

The fort's walls are adorned with ancient murals, showcasing the Pahari style of art. These paintings, which depict scenes from Puranas (ancient Hindu texts), offer a glimpse into the lifestyle of people residing in Pahari areas during that time. The well-maintained rooms of the heritage resort provide a similar experience, offering views of famous hill stations like Shimla, Kasauli, and Subathu.

Regarding its current status and restoration plans, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has allocated funds for the conservation of several monuments in Himachal Pradesh, including Arki Fort, indicating recognition of its preservation needs. The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has been involved in restoration efforts, particularly focusing on the fort’s artefacts and wall paintings.

As part of a long-term vision, the restored fort is proposed to be developed into a museum, highlighting a plan to preserve and showcase its historical and artistic heritage. While there is no detailed public information specifying the timeline or the full scope of restoration works for Arki Fort, these developments show active steps toward preservation and adaptive reuse, balancing heritage conservation with tourism through heritage hotel operations.

Arki, the town surrounding the fort, offers a tranquil and contented feeling, with the mountains giving it an air of serenity. Situated around 40 kms from Shimla, Arki Fort is an easily accessible destination, making it an excellent choice for a memorable trip. Whether you're a history buff, an art lover, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Arki Fort is a destination worth visiting.
