Sicily's Summer Tourism Boom: 2.9 Million Visitors, Americans Flocking
Sicily, Italy's largest island, is drawing more visitors than ever before. This summer, 2.9 million tourists have explored its shores, a 2.4% increase from last year. While Rome remains the most popular destination, Sicily is emerging as a top contender, with Americans being the fourth largest group of tourists.
The Sicilian capital, Palermo, is the second busiest tourism spot on the island this summer, attracting 35-40% foreign visitors. However, it's not just the capital that's drawing attention. Catania, the third most sought-after coastal getaway, has a foreign visitor share of 30-35%.
Syracuse is leading the trio of trendiest destinations, with a certified 40% of foreign tourists in short-term rentals this summer. The island is packed full of perfectly preserved Baroque towns and golden-sand beaches, offering a unique blend of culture and relaxation. Despite recent media attention, much of Sicily remains unexplored, providing a refreshing alternative to the usual tourist hotspots like Rome.
