Solo Journey through El Salvador - Preface: Goodbyes Prior to Departure - Later, I Embarked on the "Vacation Leave"

Two years ago, a romantic getaway to El Salvador was planned to celebrate two special birthdays. However, the trip was cancelled two weeks before due to the end of the relationship. Instead of letting the travel plans go to waste, the opportunity was seized to embark on a solo adventure.

Navigating public transportation between the sites I wanted to see in El Salvador seemed daunting, and Uber was limited. To overcome this challenge, I found many single tickets available on the GetYourGuide travel marketplace, avoiding the requirement for a minimum of two people for many tour operators.

The initial trip was meticulously planned, including flights, hotels, a rental car, and an itinerary with archaeological sites, volcano hikes, museums, and beach relaxation. However, with the change in travel plans, adjustments were necessary.

I booked transfers via the Daytrip app, connecting with local drivers for travel. I did not rent and drive a car during the trip, opting instead for a more affordable accommodation in the form of Airbnbs. This decision allowed me to enjoy the freedom to plan my days as I pleased and make last-minute changes during my solo trip.

Despite the initial trip being planned as a romantic getaway, solo travel enabled me to visit another of my dream destinations. Two years later, I decided to visit El Salvador as my 95th country.

Throughout the solo trip, I found opportunities to change my plans without compromising my desires. On the way from the coast to the city, I scheduled additional sightseeing stops, including a series of natural spring water pools. I joined a tour of Mayan archaeological sites and a guided hike up El Salvador's highest volcano, Santa Ana.

Safety considerations were of utmost importance during the solo trip. Although overall safety has improved, risks such as gang-related violence still exist, especially at night and in less-traveled areas. Solo travelers should stick to well-traveled locations, avoid traveling after dark, and follow local advice on safe areas to visit. Places like San Salvador, La Union, El Cuco, Suchitoto, Santa Ana, La Libertad, and beach towns such as El Zonte and Los Cóbanos are considered relatively safer and are popular with solo travelers.

Renting a car is highly recommended for flexibility, but drivers should keep doors locked and windows up, especially when traveling outside the capital. Some travelers prefer guided tours for security and ease of travel.

The vacation was a reminder of how much I enjoy solo travel. It helped me fall back in love with solo travel and reminded me of my determination to immerse myself in a destination. I spent lazy days by the coast, reading, swimming in the Pacific Ocean, and settling in the pitch-black sand. The trip was a testament to the adaptability of travel plans and the transformative power of solo travel.

What was intended as a romantic getaway to El Salvador turned into a solo adventure, offering a lifestyle of flexibility and exploration. With the need for a minimum of two people for many tour operators eliminated by the GetYourGuide travel marketplace, I embarked on a journey filled with travel experiences, from the natural spring water pools to the Mayan archaeological sites, Volcan Santa Ana, and relaxing days by the Pacific Ocean.
