The tourism industry is gearing up for a booming comeback, with China taking the helm, according to Julia Simpson, CEO of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). In a candid chat with Xinhua, she expressed her optimism about China's tourism prospects.

Simpson lauded China's moves, such as the new visa regime aimed at welcoming foreign travelers, and noted the country's impressive handling of the pandemic. "I'm very optimistic about China because the country is making all the right moves," she said.

The WTTC's forecast for 2025 suggests a record $2.1 trillion in international visitor spending, up by 164 billion dollars from the pre-pandemic high of $1.9 trillion in 2019. This translates to an unprecedented $11.7 trillion contribution to the global economy by the travel and tourism sector, accounting for 10.3% of global GDP. Notably, China's international spending by visitors had already surpassed the pre-pandemic level in the previous year.

Looking further ahead, by 2035, travel and tourism is envisioned to inject a staggering $16.5 trillion into the global economy, representing 11.5% of global GDP. Despite the impact of U.S. tariff measures, these projections remain firm.

Simpson remains confident about China's tourism sector, foreseeing a robust recovery in 2025. "Most people have already planned and even paid for their big annual holidays. There are a lot of business conferences taking place. We need to just wait and see," she added.

As for the longer term, the WTTC predicts steady growth, with the sector outpacing the broader economy at an annual rate of 3.5%. However, emerging markets and major economies like China face varying challenges in sustaining this momentum.

While the WTTC's forecasts do not specify China's exact contribution to the global tourism market for 2025 or 2035, it is clear that China plays a pivotal role in the industry's global revival. For a detailed analysis of individual countries, direct WTTC regional studies would be required. So, pack your bags and get ready for a roller-coaster ride – the travel and tourism industry isbound for a wild ride! 🎢🌞🌏
