UK Introduces Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for Most Overseas Visitors from January 2025

From 8 January 2025, most overseas visitors to the UK will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to cross its borders. This new system aims to streamline border processes and enhance security. An ETA can be obtained online for a fee of £10, approximately US $12.75.

The ETA approval process is swift, usually taking a few hours, but may extend to three business days in exceptional cases. Once approved, an ETA allows multiple entries into the United Kingdom for stays of up to six months. Its validity lasts for two years or until the traveller's passport expires, whichever comes first. Without an ETA, passengers, including infants and children, risk being denied boarding.

UK Minister for Migration and Citizenship, Seema Malhotra, views the expansion of the ETA system as a significant step towards creating a more efficient and digital border management system for the United Kingdom.

From early 2025, international visitors to the UK must obtain an ETA before crossing its borders. The system promises swift processing and long-term validity. Failure to secure an ETA may result in denied boarding. The UK government sees this move as a stride towards a more modern and secure border management system for the United Kingdom.
