Summer vacations are underway, and numerous Russians, as expected, are opting for domestic resorts, dreaming of a warm sea and pleasant sun. Regrettably, the experience proved far from satisfactory. Crowded favorites this season have faced severe criticism: numerous tourists have been expressing complaints about dirty shores, inflated prices, and dismal service.

Unpleasant Shores and Gouging Prices: The Nightmarish Russian Summer Getaway

Unwelcome intruders beware: Russian shores teem with green manure and feral men.

It's high season for vacations, and Russians are flocking to their domestic resorts, dreaming of warm seas and golden sun. But this year, reality has left them wanting. popular destinations have been under fire, facing a barrage of complaints: tourists are fuming over filthy beaches, exorbitant prices, and shoddy service.

A Sochi Surprise

Sochi, famed for its stunning landscapes, has become a major letdown for many travelers this year. As Daría from Krasnodar told us, the sea was too chill at the start of the summer, and when it finally warmed up, swimming became a grueling task due to mountains of trash on the beaches. Tourists are none too pleased about dealing with this situation given the steep sums they fork out for lodging.

Anapa: Swimming in Misery

Anapa greeted holidaymakers with another issue - an abundant algae bloom. The beaches were awash in slimy, foul-smelling seaweed, turning swimming and relaxation into a chore. Olga from Volgograd was furious with her vacation: aside from high prices and poor service, her kids came down with rotavirus and the flu.

Gelendzhik: Algae and Risky Rides

Gelendzhik didn't escape the algae invasion either. Marina from Rostov-on-Don, despite praising her hotel, which she said didn't lag behind Turkish ones, pointed out that the sea was murky. Additionally, tourists complained about reckless scooter riders whizzing along the promenade, putting pedestrians in harm's way, and the rocky bottom in the bay.

Crimea: Service with a Side of Disappointment

Crimea, despite offering a clean sea and reasonable prices, fell short in the service department. Natalia from Rostov-on-Don criticized the high prices and subpar service.

Dagestan: A Culinary Delight with a Side of Uncomfortable Attention

Dagestan, unlike other resorts, received generally positive reviews. Natalia Abramova raved about the beauty of nature, affordable prices, and mouthwatering local cuisine. However, she noted the excessive, sometimes pressure-filled attention from local men, which can be grating for some female tourists.

Abkhazia: Scenic Beauty Ruined by the Brash

Abkhazia enchanted tourists with its natural splendor and attractions. Unfortunately, the behavior of some Russians, who engaged in drunken brawls and other inappropriate activities, marred the vacation experience for others.

The Future of Russian Tourism

Despite the wave of criticism, Russian resorts remain a popular draw. Perhaps this is due to travel restrictions or a patriotic desire to support domestic tourism. In any event, it's clear that Russian resorts have a long way to go in improving vacation conditions and meeting tourists' expectations.

Anecdotal evidence from resort visitors points to deteriorated hotel conditions, with dirt, mold, and outdated facilities[4]. Staff were often inexperienced students with minimal motivation and low wages, leading to poor service. The quality of food was described as subpar, disappointing tourists searching for a better culinary experience[4].

Russia's economic straits, including inflation, rising prices for essentials, and overall economic instability, likely contribute to increased costs in the tourism sector, frustrating visitors[1]. The reduction in foreign tourist inflow and increased reliance on domestic tourism may have also pressured resorts to allocate resources and invest in upkeep[2][3].

Geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict in Ukraine, have negatively impacted popular beach destinations like Crimea, making them less appealing to Russians[3]. These circumstances, combined with staffing challenges and reduced foreign competition, have resulted in dirty beaches, inflated prices, and poor service quality as reported by visitors and reflected in the wider tourism sector context.
