Urban Pianos Invitation: Engage with Nine Keyboards Situated Throughout the City and Harbor, Encouraging You to Tickle the Ivories

From September 8th to September 19th, 2023, the streets of Harburg, a district in Hamburg, Germany, will once again be filled with the melodious strains of music as the annual 'Play the Piano!' event returns. This cultural initiative invites everyone to engage with music freely in various public spaces across the district.

The event features nine colorfully designed pianos, two more than last year, strategically placed in urban squares, shopping areas, and other accessible venues. These pianos, inspired by the 'Play Me, I'm Yours' project by British artist Luke Jerram, are designed by different artists and are available for spontaneous public performance.

The 'Play the Piano!' event encourages active citizen participation and new ideas for events at the pianos. Both amateurs and professionals are welcome to perform, with organized concerts and workshops linked to the event fostering musical exchange and encouraging people of all ages to interact with the pianos.

The initiative aims to bring spontaneous, surprising, and touching musical encounters to Harburg, promoting cultural life and public engagement with music in everyday urban spaces. The pianos can be played on Sundays to Thursdays between 11 am and 8 pm, and on Fridays and Saturdays between 11 am and 9 pm.

This year's event is part of a broader trend seen in cities across Germany and Europe, where public pianos are set up temporarily in public areas to promote music and community interaction. Registration for special events can be done online, and everyone, including schools and kindergartens, is welcome to participate in concerts, workshops, or guided tours.

The team at Harburg Marketing e.V. is responsible for placing the pianos in public spaces. Last year, Hamburg was the third city in Germany to implement this piano-playing initiative, and the project encourages local and international artist collaboration.

For exact locations and program details, visitors are advised to check the Hamburg district's official cultural event pages or local tourism offices. The project's extensive framework program includes numerous events designed to create new artistic perspectives in Harburg.
