New Observation Deck Opens at Fehmarnbelt Tunnel Construction Site

Visitors now have the opportunity to witness the progress of the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel construction firsthand, as a new observation deck has been established at the Puttgarden site in Germany. This viewing platform, built from modular shipping containers, offers a terrace 6 metres high, providing panoramic views of the ongoing work.

The observation deck, free to access 24/7, includes two binoculars and information boards explaining the project. It is located near the Danish tunnel element factory and offers visibility of the construction site on clear days. The platform operates with an environmentally friendly photovoltaic system for energy supply.

The Fehmarnbelt Tunnel, managed by Femern A/S, is claimed to be the world's longest immersed tunnel by the Danish planning company. The 18-kilometre-long tunnel will connect the German Baltic Sea island of Fehmarn and the Danish island of Lolland, serving as a road and railway connection.

Denise Juchem, spokesperson for Femern A/S, expressed her pleasure about the reception of the observation point. The platform has been well-received by locals and tourists, providing an exciting opportunity to learn about the construction process up close.

For those seeking more comprehensive information, the Infocenter Burg on Fehmarn island offers detailed exhibits, staff assistance, and presentations about the Fehmarnbelt tunnel project. The Infocenter is free to enter and open Monday to Thursday with set opening hours. Group visits and lectures can also be arranged.

Construction updates indicate that the tunnel itself is progressing actively at the site near Puttgarden. However, related infrastructure such as the German railway connection that will link to the tunnel will be delayed by approximately three years beyond the planned tunnel opening around the end of 2029.

Despite the infrastructure delays, the new observation deck offers a unique chance to observe detailed construction progress at the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel site near Puttgarden and deepen one's understanding at the Infocenter Burg on Fehmarn. The observation deck is accessible via a staircase and offers a bird's-eye view of the construction site for several weeks.

Safety reasons prevent visitors from directly accessing the tunnel construction site, but the observation deck provides an excellent alternative for those eager to learn more about this historic project.
